Sad sack with a tragedy in his past—which slowly unfolds in alternating flashback chapters—becomes a caregiver for a shoe-loving, horny teenager confined to a wheelchair. There is a roadtrip. It’s kind of obvious, and also pretty effective. Tailor-made for an Oscar-bait indie film. No, YOU cried at the end.

Book #20 — The Burgess Boys by Elizabeth Strout

After last week’s slog of getting through Persuasion I flew through this. It’s about three adult siblings from Maine who are brought back together after one of their kids does something bad to the local growing Somali community. Shifting narrators. Dour. Not a whole lot happens but the depiction of middle-age ennui is right on. Enjoyed, would do business with again.

“Oh dear!” cried Stephen. “But I’m afraid I have roughly treated this book, the reading of which did vex me so as to make every page a tedious slough, though I should say, the author was so highly recommended as being one with such a fine demeanor and gentle wit, my not finding much of that in evidence here leads me to believe I read the wrong Jane Austen book.”

I read this story collection in 2 days. It didn’t quite live up to the hype — too many stories were alike, as many are connected by the same central character. But boy, he sure writes good.

Book #17 — The Unnamed by Joshua Ferris

A super-dark bummer of a book about a lawyer who comes down with a mysterious disorder where he can’t stop walking for periods on end, to the detriment of his marriage, job, health, sanity. This guy wrote Then We Came To The End, which I quite liked. This book made me want to kill myself. I didn’t hate it. Just didn’t ever want to pick it up and read it. In the end I’m not sure what it’s about, what it wants to say, why subplots are allowed to dangle. I’m very glad it’s over. Like the cover, it’s boring but evocative.
